Status on 22 October 2026
- LA28 Olympic cricket: upcoming. Four women's teams have qualified; the other places are still to be decided.
- Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2026 (23 July to 2 August 2026): finished, with no cricket on the programme.
- Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026: finished. India won both the men's and the women's gold.
How cricket got back into the Olympics
At its 141st Session in Mumbai on 16 October 2023, the IOC approved LA28's proposal to add five sports for the 2028 Games only: baseball and softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash. The IOC and the ICC say cricket was last on the Olympic programme at Paris 1900 (search summaries). On 15 April 2025 the ICC welcomed LA28's choice of the Fairgrounds in Pomona, Southern California, as the venue, ICC Chair Jay Shah calling it a significant step towards the sport's return.
The LA28 format, as the ICC confirmed it on 29 June 2026
- Two events, one for men and one for women, each in the T20 format with six national teams and squads of 15.
- 28 matches across both events, at a purpose-built venue in Pomona.
- In each event, two groups of three. Each team plays the others in its group once, then two cross-group matches against teams that finished in a different position.
- The top two play for gold and silver, and the third and fourth for bronze.
The ICC's Classification of Official Cricket (with effect from 1 July 2026) gives these men's and women's Olympic matches T20 international status.
Dates are not confirmed here. A search summary of an Olympics.com article gives the cricket competition as 12 to 29 July 2028, with medal matches on 20 and 29 July, but the page timed out when opened in our research. Treat those dates as unconfirmed until the IOC or LA28 schedule is checked.
Qualification
- Five places in each event come through existing ICC events and the T20I rankings, with Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania each guaranteed one.
- The sixth place in each event comes through a new ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027, with eight nations in each event.
- Men's places are fixed by the ICC Men's T20I rankings on 31 December 2026.
- The host: the USA qualifies as host in either event if it is in the top 15 of the relevant T20I rankings at any time from 30 June to 31 December 2026. If not, the place passes to another nation on ranking.
- West Indies: a West Indies team cannot compete as such at the Olympics. If a West Indies side would rank among the next eight, a Caribbean Qualifier decides which National Olympic Committee goes to the Olympics Qualifier.
All from the ICC's release of 29 June 2026.
Women's teams already qualified
The 2026 Women's T20 World Cup decided four places, for the highest-placed teams from Oceania, Europe, Asia and Africa: Australia, Great Britain (through England), India and South Africa (ICC, 29 June 2026).
USA Cricket's suspension
The ICC suspended USA Cricket's membership on 23 September 2025. In the same release it said US national teams keep their right to play in ICC events, including LA28 preparations, with the ICC or its representatives managing them for the time being.
Commonwealth Games
| Games | Event | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur 1998 | Men's 50-over | South Africa beat Australia in the final (ICC history article, through a search summary) |
| Birmingham 2022 | Women's T20, its first appearance at the Games | Gold: Australia, beating India by nine runs at Edgbaston on 7 August 2022 (Australia 161 for 8, India 152). Bronze: New Zealand, beating England |
| Glasgow 2026 | None | Cricket not on the programme |
The ICC says the 1998 men's event was the only Commonwealth Games cricket before 2022. The 2022 result comes from press reports and a franchise team's site rather than the Games' own results archive. The ICC's classification gives the 2022 women's matches T20 international status. For Glasgow 2026, press reports say the Commonwealth Games Federation announced a ten-sport programme on 22 October 2024, after Victoria withdrew as host, and cricket was among the sports dropped; the Federation's own release was not opened in our research.
Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026
- Men: India beat Pakistan by 19 runs in the final on 3 October 2026, India making 211 for 6 and Pakistan 192 for 6. Pakistan took silver and Sri Lanka bronze (ICC; BCCI).
- Women: India beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final (ICC; BCCI).
- Both Indian teams were defending the titles they won at Hangzhou 2023.
According to Wikipedia (secondary), the women's event ran from 17 to 22 September and the men's from 24 September to 3 October 2026, at Korogi Sports Park. The venue's location is given two ways: Wikipedia places it in Nisshin, while a schedule report from ARY News names a Nagoya stadium.
The ICC's T20I rankings that feed LA28 qualification are on Men's T20 World Cup and Women's T20 World Cup.
